The CITB Health, Safety, and Environment (HS&E) test serves as a crucial means for these workers to demonstrate their ability to work safely on construction sites. For employers, ensuring that their workforce has successfully passed the CITB HS&E test provides the reassurance that their employees are capable of maintaining a safe working environment for themselves and others.


It is essential to note that the CITB HS&E test is a fundamental requirement for obtaining a construction industry scheme card. This card serves as a valuable credential, signifying a worker's competency in adhering to health, safety, and environmental regulations within the construction sector.

  • About the Operatives HS&E tests

    The Operatives test is designed to ensure that workers attain a fundamental level of health, safety, and environmental awareness before commencing work on-site. This test comprehensively covers the following five core knowledge areas:


    Working environment

    Occupational health

    Safety

    High risk activities

    Specialist


    To successfully pass the Operatives test, candidates must achieve a score of at least 90%. This requires answering a minimum of 45 out of the 50 questions correctly.

  • About the Specialist HS&E tests

    The Specialists HS&E tests encompass questions from the five core knowledge areas covered in the Operatives test, in addition to pertinent questions specific to the chosen specialist areas. Candidates have the option to take the Specialists test in the following topics:


    • Supervisory (SUP)
    • Demolition (DEM)
    • Plumbing (JIB) (PLUM)
    • Highway works (HIW)
    • Dpecialist work at height (WAH)
    • Lifts and escalators (LAEE)
    • Tunnelling (TUNN)
    • HVACR - heating and plumbing services (HAPS)
    • HVACR - pipefitting and welding (PFW)
    • HVACR - ductwork (DUCT)
    • HVACR - refrigeration and air conditioning (RAAC)
    • HVACE - services and facilities maintenance (SAF)

    To successfully pass the Operatives test, candidates must achieve a score of at least 90%. This requires answering a minimum of 45 out of the 50 questions correctly.

  • About the Managers and Professionals HS&E tests

    Managers and professionals in the construction industry hold the crucial responsibility of adhering to, integrating, and implementing effective HS&E (Health, Safety, and Environment) practices. By doing so, they play a vital role in reducing the occurrences of fatalities and accidents within the industry. To ensure that managers and professionals are equipped with the necessary health, safety, and environmental knowledge to effectively carry out their roles, the test comprehensively covers the following six core knowledge areas:


    Legal and management

    Occupational health, wellbeing and welfare

    General safety

    High risk activities

    Environment

    Specialist activities


    Specialist activities within the test will encompass questions specifically related to Demolition and Highway works.


    Additionally, taking industry feedback into account, certain topics within the existing key areas have been further improved and enhanced to ensure comprehensive coverage.

    Leadership

    Behavioural safety

    Improving legislative compliance.


    To successfully pass the Managers and Professionals test, candidates must achieve a score of at least 90%. This entails answering a minimum of 45 out of the 50 questions correctly.

Cost of the test


It costs £22.50 to take the HS&E Test. This does not include the booking fee*.

The HS&E tests are categorized into three types:

  2. Specialists
  3. Managers and Professionals
